Goddess Giving Birth to a Baby Goddess

Originally dated to the Aztec civilization (1300-1521), but in 2002 the figurine upon which this drawing is based was determined to be more likely from the 19th century. “Despite the controversy the piece has… become an icon, a rare rendering of the power and pain of childbirth.” (Dumbarton Oaks). In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones fixates on this artifact in the opening scenes.  Frieda Kahlo’s painting, Childbirth, was also inspired by this figure. Made of aplite.
